The first class of Application was memorable. We were absorbing Red Burns’ legacy by reading her famous speeches. Also, we had a guest speaker, Robert Krulwich, an American radio and television journalist.
His website: http://www.radiolab.org/
At the beginning, he told me that ‘when I worked in a broadcast company, my boss told me you have to speak with lower tone voice. Otherwise, you will be fired’. For radio presenters, dealing with different kinds of voices means equal to having different kinds of clothes. Particularly, when they tone down in their speeches, it means ‘dress nice and formal’. This is cliche we have, in general.
His significant breakthrough was to play and to use the voice as a tool in order to present complicated ideas rather than giving informations. ‘Various Voice with some audio equipments’ are, indeed, potential media to convey ‘a concept’ not only to give feelings.
I deeply understand how important to make complicated topics easier to understand for people. Our ways of communication are not only ‘words’ anymore yet ‘multimedia’. Even though I did not use multimedia in the AA(my school), ‘giving presentation’ means ‘to simplify it’ and also ‘to entertain the audiences’. We never know how can our presentations were successful as we need to target the audiences first in order to get their attention as much as possible. That is what Robert told us as well at the beginning. Some people prefer intellectual yet some love purely fun stuff. Some have specific knowledge about one topic and if the presentation is too simple, some intellectuals get very bored and say ‘have you done only those?’ in a sarcastic way.
After the class, I realized why the professor took him for our speaker. ‘Computational Media’ have given potentials to invent new ways of communications. I would like to make a note of what he told us ‘it was very isolated jobs to do’. Innovation is very isolated thing as I experienced as it is ‘a brand new idea’ which no one has not been done yet. Who can understand about it?
Many students started to discuss about the speaker after this and we gained deeper understanding about him. I’d like to say thank you for our program and people. I cannot explain how happy am I now.
