David Byrne: Playing The Building:
This is a stunning project. I was amazed he created an instrument by using one whole building. All the components became sounds. He used the old structure as well as the obvious components like doors and windows. I liked the idea that a sound links one particular element which means a sound is no more only a tone and frequency yet it attaches a meaning.
Janet Cardiff – Her Long Black Hair
I didn’t listen before we created our sound piece for the last assignment yet it seems the concept is quite similar to ours. I know that sound were created not just recorded on the street in order to create ‘sound of a city’. By recording the street noise, we realized that our ears detect different from what the recording device records. Whatever, her works create fantasy stories. One note here I want to emphasis is that we have created ‘ a sound of what we haven’t heard’. For instance, we never know sound of space. I believe that a sound come from films and nowadays, we symbolized sounds of something and somewhere through media.
Stephen Vitiello – A Bell For Every Minute:
The video worked only a minute. I couldn’t watch it.
John Cage – 4:33
I knew this famous composition by John Cage yet I didn’t know they did a live concert in Barbican before watching this video. It is kind of impressive that they really kept silence. I liked the idea the sound play in our mind which remains feeling of ‘meditation’ or some spiritual thoughts. This concert was reconstruction of what John Cage did in the past yet it gives different space and thoughts for the participants that they reminded all the John’s works and philosophy etc.
Laurie Anderson – O Superman
The conceptual music work sounds like punk music. Not only this yet many musicians have tried experimental works with sound which is one I like yet I do not listen. The assimilation of technology and sound can really inspire us to create a music instrument. Her video and sound work is well edited and created.
